Privacy Policy

Effective Date: July 1, 2025

At Plane, your privacy matters. We're committed to handling your personal information responsibly—whether you use our cloud platform or host Plane on your own infrastructure.

This Privacy Policy outlines how we collect, use, and protect your data when you interact with Plane's website and cloud services. It also explains your rights and choices. If you use a self-hosted version of Plane, this policy applies only to limited interactions with our website, support channels, and optional telemetry features—we do not access or process your self-hosted instance data.

1. What This Policy Covers

This policy applies to:

  • Cloud services hosted by Plane Software, Inc.
  • plane.so and related marketing websites
  • Communications with our support, sales, or product teams
  • Optional telemetry (with consent) from self-hosted instances

It does not apply to data stored in your self-hosted Plane instance. If you're running Plane on your infrastructure, your data never leaves your environment, unless you explicitly choose to share it with us for support or troubleshooting.

2. Information We Collect

We collect different types of information depending on how you interact with us:

When you use Plane Cloud or visit our website:

  • Contact details (name, email, company)
  • Account data (login info, profile, preferences)
  • Payment and billing information (processed via Stripe)
  • Usage data (IP address, browser type, activity logs)
  • Support conversations and feedback

When using Plane Self-Hosted:

  • No customer data is collected by default.
  • We may collect minimal telemetry (such as version numbers and usage metadata) only if you opt in.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use personal data to:

  • Provide and support Plane Cloud
  • Respond to sales or support requests
  • Improve and secure our platform
  • Communicate updates, events, and educational content
  • Comply with legal obligations

We process data only when we have a legal basis to do so—typically your consent, a contractual need, or a legitimate business interest.

You can unsubscribe from non-essential communications at any time.

4. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal data. We may share it with trusted third parties who help us deliver our services, including:

  • Payment providers (e.g., Stripe)
  • Infrastructure partners (e.g., hosting, analytics)
  • Support tools (e.g., email/chat platforms)
  • Legal or compliance entities (only when required)

All partners are under strict contractual obligations to protect your data and use it only as necessary.

5. Self-Hosted Users

If you're running a self-hosted version of Plane:

  • We do not have access to your instance or its data.
  • You are the data controller and fully responsible for securing and managing that environment.
  • You may choose to enable optional telemetry or request support—only then do we process limited data to help you.

6. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access or export your data
  • Correct or delete your data
  • Object to or restrict how we use your data
  • Opt out of marketing emails
  • Request that we stop sharing your data with third parties (where applicable)

To exercise these rights, email us at legal@plane.so. We'll respond as required by law.

7. International Data Transfers

If you're based outside the United States, your data may be transferred to and stored in the U.S. or other countries where we or our partners operate. We use standard contractual clauses and other safeguards to ensure your data remains protected.

8. Data Retention

We retain your data only as long as necessary:

  • To provide the services you've requested
  • To comply with legal and financial obligations
  • To improve security, detect abuse, or resolve disputes

Once data is no longer needed, we securely delete or anonymize it.

9. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards (encryption, access controls, monitoring) to protect your data. However, no system is 100% secure. You are responsible for securing your passwords and devices.

10. Children

Plane is not intended for children under 13. If we learn we've collected data from a child, we'll delete it promptly.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as our practices evolve. When we make significant changes, we'll notify you through email or an in-product message. The latest version will always be available at plane.so/legals/privacy-policy.
