Great tools shouldn't make you think about how to navigate them. They should get out of the way and let you focus on the work.

At Plane, we went back to first principles to reimagine not just what we’re building, but how it all fits together as we grow into a multi-product platform. Projects and Wiki have long lived side by side, but App Rail brings them together in a way that feels intentional — not just co-located, but truly connected.

The result is something we’re calling App Rail. It’s more than just a new way to switch between apps. It’s a foundation for how Plane will scale without getting bloated or confusing.

A new navigation system for a multi-app future

We asked: How do you make navigation feel invisible, even as the product grows?

Here’s the structure we landed on:

App Rail

Your home base. It only shows real apps — no static pages, no “Home,” no dashboards pretending to be features. Just the tools you use every day:
ProjectsWiki, and soon, Desk (👀) with more to come.

Side navigation

Once you're inside an app, this rail adapts. It’s context-awarelightweight, and only shows what you need, when you need it.

Canvas

This is where work happens. Fast, focused, and beautiful. No clutter. No chrome. Just your work items, pages — ready to go.

This isn't just about navigation. It's about scaling Plane.

Most tools layer on navigation as an afterthought. We’ve rebuilt it as a system, with clarity about what belongs where and why.
That’s why App Rail will never show pages or dashboards — only apps. That one principle alone removes a ton of cognitive load.

And as Plane becomes a multi-product ecosystem, the risk is always sprawl.
App Rail is our guardrail. It lets us ship more power, without adding more confusion.

The first version is already live in your workspace.
Projects and Wiki are on the rail today — and more apps will be added soon.

Can’t wait for you to try it.
